Williams Formula 1 team principal James Vowles has announced the Grove-based outfit will pursue legal action to challenge what he describes as “false claims” published in British national media outlets last week. The team’s decision to take the matter to court comes in response to reports detailing allegations made by a former executive against the Williams organization and its parent company Dorilton Capital.
The Guardian reported that former chief marketing officer Claudia Schwarz, who was terminated from her position in 2022, has filed court documents alleging she was dismissed after raising concerns about alleged sexist and racist treatment within the organization. Schwarz’s legal filing also questioned the true ownership structure of the Williams team, accusations that the organization has categorically denied.
Dorilton Capital has launched a counter-claim against Schwarz, alleging the former executive filed fraudulent expenses and fees totaling $6.9 million. The counter-suit also claims Schwarz maintained an “inappropriate relationship” with former CEO Darren Fultz of the race team’s holding company, with allegations suggesting Fultz overlooked the purported financial misconduct.
Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Vowles emphasized the team’s position while acknowledging the constraints of discussing ongoing litigation. “There is not a lot I can talk about publicly, but those claims are false for a start, and they will be fought in a court of law, which is where they should be at this point in time,” the team principal stated.
Vowles sought to reassure stakeholders about the team’s internal stability amid the legal proceedings. “With the team, the team is comfortable; they know who we are, what we stand for as our values, and none of that has changed,” he added, describing the matter as “a legal case, and a complex legal case.”
