Alonso Warns Aston Martin Gearbox Issues Could Prevent Monaco GP Participation

Fernando Alonso has delivered a stark warning about Aston Martin’s chances at this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix, revealing that persistent gearbox problems could render the team unable to compete safely on Formula 1’s most unforgiving circuit. The two-time world champion disclosed that unpredictable transmission behavior during downshifts has plagued the AMR26 since the Miami Grand Prix, creating potentially dangerous situations that could prove catastrophic around Monaco’s narrow streets.

The severity of the issue became apparent during Friday’s opening practice session when Alonso experienced sudden rear traction loss at the tunnel exit, resulting in contact with the barrier on approach to the chicane. While it remains unclear whether this incident directly related to the gearbox troubles, the Spaniard emphasized the critical nature of the problem in Monaco’s unique environment where precision is paramount and errors are immediately punished.

“Monaco is not the place to have a random downshift, and you have rear [brake] locking or [engine] pushing or something like that. Then you will crash into the wall, and the driver will look stupid,” Alonso explained to media on Thursday. He described scenarios where drivers become “passengers” when the transmission unexpectedly delivers full throttle input during gear changes, creating an alarming lack of control at crucial moments.

The gearbox malfunction represents a new technical challenge for Aston Martin after the team believed it had resolved the Honda-related reliability issues that hampered their season opening rounds. Alonso painted a concerning picture of the current situation, stating that if the Miami-spec downshift problems persist, “probably we cannot even race, because we will crash in one of the braking points due to a very different downshift type.”

While rival teams focus on traditional Monaco preparations involving setup optimization and qualifying strategies, the Silverstone-based outfit finds itself addressing fundamental safety concerns. The team has dedicated the past two weeks since Canada to resolving the transmission issues, recognizing Monaco’s importance on the Formula 1 calendar and the potential consequences of an unresolved technical problem on such a demanding circuit.
