Audi Shows Strong Monaco Pace with Both Hulkenberg and Bortoleto Reaching Top 10 in Practice

Audi demonstrated impressive form on the opening day of the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, successfully placing both drivers inside the top 10 during Friday’s practice sessions. The German manufacturer’s encouraging performance at the demanding street circuit suggests they could emerge as genuine contenders for Saturday’s crucial qualifying session, where track position proves vital for Sunday’s race.

Veteran driver Nico Hulkenberg leveraged his extensive experience to secure seventh place in the morning’s first practice with a lap time of 1:15.343, while rookie teammate Gabriel Bortoleto claimed ninth position despite encountering early difficulties. The Brazilian driver clocked 1:15.750 but acknowledged experiencing “a few hiccups” during the initial stages of the session before the team’s quick recovery allowed him to reach the top 10.

The afternoon’s second practice session reinforced Audi’s competitive positioning, with Hulkenberg again leading the team’s charge in eighth place with a 1:14.094 lap time. Bortoleto continued his upward trajectory, improving to ninth with 1:14.359 and significantly reducing the gap to his more experienced teammate, demonstrating growing comfort with the challenging Monaco layout.

Hulkenberg expressed satisfaction with the team’s progress while maintaining focus on Saturday’s decisive qualifying session. “It was quite a decent Friday for us,” the German driver stated, emphasizing the importance of thorough analysis and preparation. He stressed the need to “stay calm, do our homework and make sure we’re ready to maximize our opportunities tomorrow” as the team works to maintain their promising momentum.

Bortoleto praised the smoothness of the afternoon session and highlighted valuable learning opportunities for the team’s development. “FP2 felt smooth and clean, and I was able to consistently improve throughout the session,” the Brazilian noted, adding that despite traffic challenges, he felt satisfied with their ultimate performance. The rookie emphasized how the day’s running provided crucial insights into car balance and limitations, giving the team clear direction for Saturday’s preparations.
