Red Bull Team Principal Mekies Urges Caution Despite First 2026 F1 Podium in Canada

Red Bull Racing Team Principal Laurent Mekies has cautioned against overconfidence following the team’s breakthrough podium finish at the Canadian Grand Prix, where Max Verstappen claimed third place to secure the squad’s first trip to the rostrum in the 2026 Formula 1 season. The Austrian team’s performance represented a continuation of their upward trajectory after implementing significant technical upgrades to the RB22 car that were first introduced at the Miami Grand Prix.

Verstappen’s third-place finish came after an intense battle with Lewis Hamilton throughout much of the Montreal race, demonstrating the effectiveness of Red Bull’s latest development package. Mekies confirmed that the team had narrowed the performance deficit to championship leaders Mercedes compared to their showing in Miami, with qualifying margins reduced to three-tenths of a second and race pace improving from the half-second gap they experienced in Florida.

Despite the encouraging signs, Mekies emphasized the need for measured optimism when speaking to media outlets. “There is probably no reason to get too excited in a way that you could also have a track layout effect, a track that could be forgiving for certain aspects of the car,” he explained. The team principal noted that while they finished 40 seconds behind the race winner in Miami, the gap was smaller in Montreal, though track-specific characteristics could have contributed to the improved performance.

The Red Bull boss highlighted that their progress was particularly noteworthy given that rival teams had also brought upgrade packages to the Canadian race weekend. “If you consider that the competition had another flow of updates this weekend, it’s just confirming that we are going in the right direction with the development,” Mekies stated, suggesting the team’s technical direction remains sound despite the competitive pressure from other constructors.

As Formula 1 heads into the European portion of the 2026 season, Red Bull appears positioned to establish itself as a regular podium contender once again. However, the team acknowledges they remain significantly behind Mercedes in terms of outright pace, indicating substantial work lies ahead if they hope to challenge for race victories and championship honors this season.
