A racing helmet worn by legendary Ferrari driver Gilles Villeneuve has shattered auction records after selling for $1.2 million, making it the most expensive Formula 1 helmet ever purchased. The Hall of Fame Collection facilitated the historic sale of the 44-year-old piece, which has now returned to Canada following the record-breaking transaction.
The helmet holds particular significance as one of only two that Villeneuve used during the 1982 season. Most notably, this specific piece was worn during the Canadian driver’s final podium appearance at Imola, occurring just two weeks before his tragic death in a qualifying crash at the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix. Villeneuve, who won six races during his Ferrari career, remains one of the sport’s most beloved figures.
The sale establishes a new benchmark for Formula 1 memorabilia, surpassing the previous record held by an Ayrton Senna helmet from 1992 that sold for just over $900,000 last year. The Villeneuve helmet came complete with its original GPA bag and had been housed in a private collection for nearly three decades before being offered for sale.
“History has been made,” stated the Hall of Fame Collection in announcing the record purchase. “The first helmet to sell for over $1M US Dollars is this Gilles Villeneuve original GPA race used helmet from 1982. Memorabilia values continue to increase as top collectors around the world are considering these items like investment pieces. This sale certainly helps celebrate Gilles’ legacy.”
