McLaren Open to Engine Manufacturing if Formula 1 Costs Drop Significantly

McLaren CEO Zak Brown has revealed the team would seriously consider developing its own Formula 1 power unit if financial barriers were substantially reduced, potentially transforming the Woking-based outfit into a full works manufacturer. The comments come as FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has expressed support for a possible return to V8 engines with reduced electrical components by 2030, a proposal that has garnered positive reactions from multiple manufacturers due to simpler designs and more engaging sound for spectators.

Speaking to SBJ, Brown outlined the critical financial condition that would need to be met for McLaren to enter engine manufacturing. “I think if you got an engine formula that was financially viable then, yeah, we would consider it and the technology,” Brown stated. “That being said, we couldn’t be happier with Mercedes. If something is presented to us that first financially makes sense, then we’ll have a look at it.”

The discussion around future power unit regulations has intensified amid criticism from drivers regarding the current hybrid systems introduced this season. Many competitors have voiced frustration about feeling limited in wheel-to-wheel combat, with overtaking opportunities often dictated by available battery energy reserves rather than pure racing skill when approaching straightaways.

Despite the driver complaints, Brown defended the current racing product’s entertainment value for television audiences. “The racing is great, if you didn’t hear the drivers and were just watching on TV, the TV product is great,” he explained. “There’s passing, five different leaders in Miami, passes for the lead, so I think the fans watching the race are going, ‘That’s a damn exciting race.'” Brown emphasized that drivers are adapting to the new technology while regulations continue being refined, comparing battery management to existing challenges like tire and rule management that have always been part of Formula 1.
