Mercedes has temporarily blocked Andrea Kimi Antonelli from pursuing a Nordschleife permit, with deputy team principal Bradley Lord making clear the 19-year-old Italian will not be racing on the Nürburgring’s famed circuit in 2026.
Antonelli sparked speculation earlier this year when he mentioned in a video that he wanted to obtain the DMSB Nordschleife Permit (DPN) “by the end of the year.” The comment quickly circulated on social media, prompting questions about whether Mercedes would allow their young star to follow in Max Verstappen’s footsteps at the “Green Hell.”
Lord addressed the matter during this year’s Nürburgring 24 Hours, delivering a firm response when asked whether Antonelli would be permitted to pursue the licence in 2026.
“No,” Lord said bluntly. “I’ve spoken to him about it. I think he meant it more as a joke.”
With a grin, Lord added that Antonelli might “give it a try after four world championships,” referencing Verstappen, who Lord said “perhaps has a bit more range thanks to his experience” compared with the 19-year-old.
Verstappen’s Nordschleife Experience Sets Precedent
Verstappen has contested several races on the Nordschleife and made his debut in the 24-hour race this year. Alongside teammates Daniel Juncadella, Jules Gounon and Lucas Auer, the Verstappen.com Racing Mercedes led for the majority of the race before a driveshaft issue in the closing hours ended their victory hopes.
For now, Lord emphasised that Antonelli is expected to keep his “full focus” on Formula 1. The teenager currently leads the drivers’ championship after taking three consecutive grand prix wins.
Mercedes Dominance Continues
After the first four races of the 2026 season, Antonelli’s lead over teammate George Russell stands at 20 points. Mercedes tops the constructors’ standings with 180 points, having won all four races so far this season.
The decision to block Antonelli from the Nordschleife reflects Mercedes’ commitment to protecting their championship leader during a season where the team has returned to dominant form. With the Monaco Grand Prix approaching on 25 May 2026, Antonelli will remain focused on extending his championship advantage rather than exploring Germany’s most challenging circuit.
