Andrea Kimi Antonelli claimed a dramatic pole position for the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix, denying Max Verstappen by the narrowest of margins in a breathtaking qualifying session on June 6th. The Mercedes driver delivered when it mattered most, posting a final lap time that proved just enough to edge out the Red Bull star, who had looked set to secure top spot until running wide at Rascasse on his crucial final attempt.
The qualifying session unfolded with typical Monaco drama as Gabriel Bortoleto’s promising Audi campaign ended prematurely when he clipped the barrier at Nouvelle Chicane, damaging his front-left suspension. This incident proved costly for several drivers in the elimination zone, with Oliver Bearman narrowly missing the Q2 cut after a high-speed slide in the Swimming Pool section left him a tenth short. Carlos Sainz Jr managed to escape Q1 elimination with a late 1:14.348, bumping Esteban Ocon out of contention.
Mercedes faced internal struggles as George Russell consistently trailed his teammate by significant margins throughout qualifying. Russell complained of handling issues and finished over half a second slower than Antonelli in the final session, while Lewis Hamilton also struggled with car balance, telling race engineer Carlos Santi that “something’s wrong with the car” after failing to match his teammate’s pace.
The top-10 shootout saw Antonelli initially set the benchmark with a 1:12.375, but Charles Leclerc briefly claimed provisional pole with an exceptional 1:12.351 lap. However, Verstappen appeared destined to secure his starting position until his costly mistake at the final corner, crossing the line just one thousandth of a second behind Antonelli’s eventual pole-winning time. The Ferrari drivers secured the second row, while the session highlighted the competitive gap between the top teams and the rest of the field.
