Helmut Marko Identifies Internal Rivalry as Only Threat to Mercedes’ Dominant F1 Campaign

Red Bull’s former motorsport advisor Helmut Marko believes Mercedes’ stranglehold on the 2026 Formula 1 season can only be broken from within, as rising tensions between teammates Kimi Antonelli and George Russell represent the sole vulnerability in an otherwise dominant campaign. After five rounds, the Silver Arrows have claimed every available Grand Prix victory plus a Sprint triumph in China, establishing commanding leads in both championships.

Italian prodigy Antonelli has emerged as the standout performer with four race wins, building a substantial 43-point advantage over his more experienced teammate Russell. Speaking to OE24, Marko praised Mercedes’ comprehensive package, noting they possess “the best engine” and “set the tone with the battery” while finally delivering “a competitive chassis” for the first time since 2021, complemented by what he termed “a strong driver pairing.”

However, that strength could prove to be Mercedes’ Achilles’ heel, as tensions between the teammates have escalated dramatically. The rivalry erupted publicly during the Canadian Grand Prix weekend, where Antonelli accused Russell of unfairly forcing him off track during the Sprint race. Their animosity continued into Sunday’s main event with an aggressive wheel-to-wheel battle featuring multiple mistakes and off-track excursions before Russell’s race ended with a catastrophic battery failure, allowing Antonelli to secure another victory.

Marko expressed admiration for the fearless driving style of the teenage sensation while acknowledging Russell’s experience will fuel a continued fight back. “Although I find it very refreshing how the young Antonelli lets the car fly, Russell is the experienced one, who will also strike back,” the Austrian observed. He sees this internal conflict as competitors’ only realistic hope, stating bluntly: “That they tear each other apart in the process is the only hope. Otherwise Mercedes is gone.”

Looking ahead to this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix, Marko suggested the unique characteristics of the Monte Carlo circuit could provide Ferrari with a rare opportunity to challenge Mercedes’ supremacy. He believes the team “will have a hard time with the slow corners,” potentially opening the door for Charles Leclerc and Ferrari to capitalize on home advantage in the Principality’s tight, technical layout.
