Williams Formula 1 driver Carlos Sainz has revealed that his perspective on becoming a father has undergone a dramatic transformation since his sisters welcomed children into their families. The 31-year-old Spaniard, who has been in a relationship with Rebecca Donaldson since summer 2023, admitted in a recent interview with Vanity Fair Spain that experiencing uncle duties has sparked newfound enthusiasm for the prospect of parenthood.
The former Ferrari driver explained how witnessing his nephews’ births completely shifted his worldview on family life. “Something that has really changed my life, and that I didn’t expect, has been the birth of my nephews, my sisters’ children,” Sainz shared. “I didn’t think I’d be so excited to share time with them. And yes, they’ve made me see life differently. Even on my parents’ side, seeing them become grandparents and enjoying their grandchildren so much. It changes your perspective on everything.”
Sainz acknowledged that his attitude toward fatherhood has evolved significantly over the past two years. He confessed that before becoming an uncle, starting a family “was something that never crossed my mind” and he “wouldn’t have even considered being a father.” However, the experience of watching his family expand has brought the concept much closer to his heart, making him view parenthood “with more enthusiasm” and in “a better light.”
The Williams star emphasized how the experience has taught him to prioritize quality time with loved ones, whether spending moments with Donaldson in Monaco or visiting family in Madrid during breaks from his demanding racing schedule. Sainz joins fellow Spanish driver Fernando Alonso, who welcomed his first child earlier this year, in demonstrating that F1 careers and family life can successfully coexist.
