Pierre Gasly’s eighth-place finish at the Canadian Grand Prix provided Alpine with valuable championship points, but the result has failed to mask ongoing technical problems that continue to plague the French driver’s Formula 1 campaign. Despite the team’s significant progress in 2024, mysterious handling issues have emerged since Miami, leaving Gasly and Alpine’s engineers searching for answers as they prepare for the Monaco Grand Prix.
The 28-year-old driver has experienced a notable performance decline following Alpine’s introduction of upgrades to the A526 chassis. Gasly has been outqualified by teammate Franco Colapinto in four consecutive qualifying sessions across both Miami and Montreal sprint weekends, a stark contrast to his strong early-season form. The Frenchman reports a fundamental change in his car’s behavior that has significantly impacted his confidence, particularly in low-speed traction scenarios.
“It’s [been] the same thing since the first lap in practice in Miami,” Gasly explained following Sunday’s race. “We see it on data, we’re pretty clear on what’s happening and we’ve just got to understand exactly where it comes from, and it’s going to be part of the work we’ll have to do ahead of Monaco.” The persistent nature of these issues has prompted Alpine’s technical team to implement various diagnostic measures, including removing Gasly’s car from parc ferme conditions after a disappointing 19th-place sprint qualifying result.
Alpine’s troubleshooting efforts have included reverting to previous aerodynamic specifications, with Gasly even testing an older floor configuration in an attempt to isolate the root cause of the handling problems. The team’s process of elimination approach demonstrates the complexity of the issue, which appears clearly visible in telemetry data but remains elusive in terms of its origin. Gasly’s qualifying performance in Montreal was further compromised by an unusual incident involving a groundhog strike during Q1, which caused damage that ultimately contributed to his Q2 elimination while Colapinto advanced to Q3.
