Verstappen Slams Montoya Over Suggestion to Punish F1 Critics: “He Just Talks Nonsense”

Max Verstappen has launched a scathing attack on Juan Pablo Montoya after the former Formula 1 driver suggested that the sport should consider punishing drivers who publicly criticize F1. The three-time world champion dismissed Montoya’s comments in characteristically blunt fashion, stating that the Colombian “just talks nonsense” when discussing modern Formula 1 issues.

Montoya had previously argued that drivers should face consequences for making negative public statements about the sport, particularly regarding regulations, race formats, or administrative decisions. The former McLaren and Williams driver believed such criticism could damage F1’s reputation and suggested the sport’s governing body should take action against outspoken drivers who air grievances publicly.

Verstappen, known for his candid opinions on various F1 matters, firmly rejected Montoya’s proposal during recent media interactions. The Red Bull Racing star has been one of the most vocal current drivers regarding issues within the sport, frequently expressing his views on everything from sprint race formats to regulatory changes and calendar expansion.

The Dutch driver’s response highlights the ongoing debate within the F1 paddock about driver freedom of expression versus protecting the sport’s commercial interests. Many current drivers, including Verstappen, have used their platforms to voice concerns about various aspects of modern Formula 1, viewing such discourse as essential for the sport’s development and authenticity.
