Russell “Lost for Words” After Power Unit Failure Ends Canadian GP Victory Bid

George Russell expressed his devastation after a sudden power unit failure forced him to retire from the lead of the Canadian Grand Prix on lap 30, describing himself as “lost for words” following the heartbreaking conclusion to what had been a dominant weekend. The Mercedes driver was cruising toward victory when his car suffered a complete electrical shutdown mid-corner, leaving him unable to brake properly as everything “just turned off all of a sudden.”

Despite the crushing disappointment, Russell took pride in his weekend performance, having secured pole position for both the sprint and main race while winning Saturday’s sprint event. “I’m a bit lost for words to be honest right now,” Russell told Sky Sports. “I’ve got to be honest, I’m proud of my weekend. Pole in the sprint, won the sprint, pole in qualifying. I was leading when I stopped… From my side I don’t feel like there was anything more I could have done this weekend.”

Russell’s retirement handed teammate Kimi Antonelli a comfortable path to his fourth consecutive grand prix victory, with the 19-year-old Italian extending his championship lead to 43 points. The two Mercedes drivers had been engaged in an intense battle for the lead before Russell’s mechanical failure, trading positions in what Russell described as reminiscent of their karting days.

The veteran driver praised the thrilling wheel-to-wheel combat with his younger teammate, stating he “loved it” and wished it could have continued. “I thought it was great, I loved it to be honest, I really enjoyed it. I felt like the karting days, you know, we didn’t make any contact, it was hard, close. Yeah, I loved it. That’s what racing is about,” Russell explained.

With Russell’s unexpected exit, Lewis Hamilton capitalized for Ferrari by overtaking Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in the closing stages to claim second place. McLaren endured a disastrous afternoon as both of their cars failed to score points, dealing a significant blow to the reigning constructors’ champions’ title defense.
