Oscar Piastri Finally Speaks Out on Red Bull F1 Transfer Speculation

Oscar Piastri has addressed swirling rumours linking him with a potential blockbuster move to Red Bull, firmly stating his commitment to McLaren at the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend.

The 25-year-old Australian, who has emerged as one of the grid’s standout performers, has been frequently mentioned as a potential replacement for Max Verstappen should the Dutchman activate an exit clause in his Red Bull contract that reportedly kicks in if he sits outside the top two in the Drivers’ Championship at the summer break.

Speaking to Sky Sports F1’s Ted Kravitz in Montreal, Piastri put the speculation to rest. “I’m happy with where I am. It’s obviously flattering to have those kind of comments but very happy with where I am and yeah I’ve got a very good relationship with me and McLaren so why change?”

Verstappen’s Uncertain Future Fuels Speculation

The Red Bull-Piastri rumours have intensified as Verstappen finds himself in an unfamiliar position this season. The four-time world champion currently sits seventh in the standings, a distant 60 points behind second-placed George Russell and well outside the top-two threshold that would keep him contractually bound to Red Bull through 2028.

Former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner previously expressed regret about not signing Piastri years ago, comments that have resurfaced and added fuel to the transfer speculation. With Verstappen himself being linked to McLaren in what would be the most seismic driver move in recent F1 history, the dominoes could fall in dramatic fashion during what is shaping up as an extraordinary silly season ahead of 2027.

Red Bull-McLaren Tensions Escalate

The driver speculation forms just one layer of the increasingly fraught relationship between Red Bull and McLaren. The impending departure of Verstappen’s race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase to McLaren has created additional controversy, with the Italian set to join the papaya squad no later than 2028 as Chief Racing Officer.

Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies has courted further drama by claiming Lambiase is actually leaving to become team principal at McLaren, an incendiary suggestion given that Andrea Stella remains firmly in the role. The comment has only heightened tensions between the two teams as they battle both on and off the circuit.

Piastri’s firm commitment to McLaren provides clarity in at least one corner of what promises to be a turbulent driver market. With the Canadian Grand Prix unfolding today under a rain hazard declared by the FIA, attention will soon return to on-track action where Piastri and his McLaren team-mate Lando Norris look to continue their strong 2026 campaign.
