Norris Criticizes Complex Energy Management Rules, Says Cool-Down Laps Shouldn’t Require Driver Skill

McLaren driver Lando Norris has expressed frustration with Formula 1’s current energy management requirements, arguing that the technical regulations have become overly complicated, particularly during cool-down laps where drivers shouldn’t need specialized skills to manage their cars properly.

The British driver highlighted how the current power unit regulations, which split energy nearly equally between combustion and electric sources, force drivers to constantly monitor their battery levels to maximize performance. This creates a particularly challenging scenario at circuits like Miami and Montreal, where long full-throttle sections in the final sector demand fully charged batteries before starting qualifying attempts, while regulations simultaneously prevent drivers from going too slowly on out-laps.

Speaking on Thursday, Norris detailed the complexity drivers face: “If you go too slow at times, you get penalised. If you go too quick at times, you get penalised. It’s just difficult.” He explained that drivers must spend significant time monitoring their dashboard displays rather than focusing on track position and blue flag situations, creating an additional layer of complexity that affects performance.

The 24-year-old described various scenarios that can compromise battery management, including loss of boost pressure from poor exits, battery depletion from going too fast, insufficient charging from going too slow, and the complications created by blue flag situations that force drivers to slow down and then reaccelerate, further draining battery power.

Norris emphasized his belief that cool-down laps should be straightforward rather than requiring advanced technical skills, stating: “Especially if we’re just on a cool-down lap. There should be no skill required for that kind of thing. You have to be pretty skilled at nailing it.” He confirmed that McLaren reviewed these energy management challenges following their Miami Grand Prix experience and will work to improve their approach to these technical requirements.
