Brundle Backs Russell in Heated Mercedes Teammate Battle During Canadian GP Sprint

Sky Sports Formula 1 commentator Martin Brundle has weighed in on the controversial wheel-to-wheel battle between Mercedes teammates George Russell and Kimi Antonelli during Saturday’s Canadian Grand Prix sprint race, stating he would not have penalized Russell for the incident that left the young Italian driver frustrated and off track.

The drama unfolded on lap six of the Montreal sprint when Antonelli attempted a bold overtaking maneuver around the outside of Turn 1. As both drivers navigated the corner, Russell hit the inside kerb, causing his car to bounce outward and forcing Antonelli wide. The contact sent the 19-year-old across the grass and off circuit, allowing McLaren’s Lando Norris to capitalize and claim second place behind race winner Russell.

Antonelli’s anger was evident over team radio as he protested the move, declaring “I tried to make my move, but I need to review that because I was well alongside and got pushed off. It is what it is.” The rookie’s frustrations boiled over after taking the checkered flag when he sarcastically stated, “If we need to race like this, that’s good to know!”

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff repeatedly attempted to calm his driver during the race, telling Antonelli to “concentrate on the driving, please, not on the radio moaning.” Following the race, Wolff continued to manage the situation, firmly instructing his driver that such discussions should remain internal rather than being aired over public radio channels.

The incident has sparked debate within the paddock about acceptable racing standards between teammates and whether Russell’s defensive driving crossed the line. While Antonelli clearly felt wronged by his teammate’s actions, Brundle’s assessment suggests the stewards made the correct decision in allowing the racing incident to stand without penalty.
