Red Bull Technical Director Optimistic After Miami Upgrades Show Promise

Red Bull’s technical director Pierre Waché has expressed cautious optimism following the team’s upgrade package introduced at the Miami Grand Prix, describing the improvements as “encouraging” as the Milton Keynes-based outfit seeks to recover from a disappointing start to the 2024 Formula 1 season. The Austrian squad entered the campaign with hopes of maintaining their position among the front-runners but has instead experienced a significant drop in competitiveness.

The reigning constructors’ champions have struggled to mount any serious podium challenges through the opening races, with Max Verstappen’s fifth-place finish in Miami representing their strongest result to date. However, the team’s mood shifted noticeably following their Florida performance, with the upgrade package appearing to address several fundamental issues that had plagued their early-season form.

“Miami saw us take a clear step forward, with the upgrade package delivering encouraging gains in performance and helping address some key areas on the car,” Waché explained. “It highlighted some car weaknesses and room of improvement to extract the overall performance.” The French engineer’s comments suggest the team has identified specific areas where their RB20 challenger was falling short of expectations.

Looking ahead to this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, Red Bull will continue their development push with additional minor updates planned for the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Waché indicated that the positive momentum from Miami has energized the entire organization after months of intensive behind-the-scenes work that had yet to translate into on-track gains.

“Canada will be another good test of the package alongside some minor updates this weekend,” the technical director added. “It has been a positive boost for the team to see the progress translating on track after a lot of hard work behind the scenes, and we expect car development to be made as we head into the European races.” The team will be hoping their upward trajectory continues as the championship battle intensifies in the coming rounds.
