Brundle Urges Russell to Strike Back Against Antonelli for ‘Psychological’ Advantage in Canada

Sky Sports commentator Martin Brundle has emphasized the psychological importance of George Russell regaining momentum against Mercedes teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli at this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix. The former F1 driver believes Russell needs to halt the 19-year-old Italian’s impressive early-season dominance to prevent further mental damage in their championship battle.

Antonelli has stunned the paddock by winning three of the opening four races in 2026, building a commanding 20-point lead over Russell despite entering the season as the underdog. The teenager has shown remarkable composure, converting his first three pole positions into victories and securing his third consecutive triumph in Miami. His consistent pace and ability to handle pressure have caught many by surprise in what represents the biggest regulatory shake-up in Formula 1 history.

Brundle stressed that while 482 points remain available in the championship, the psychological aspect may prove more crucial than the mathematical deficit. “I don’t think the points deficit is that much of a problem for George Russell,” Brundle told Sky Sports News. “George needs to stop Antonelli in his tracks and get a few points back against him, but I think it’s more psychological than the mathematics.” The veteran broadcaster pointed to Canada as Russell’s opportunity to strike back, noting the British driver’s strength at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve compared to his struggles in Miami.

Mercedes arrives in Montreal with their first major upgrade package of the season, hoping to respond after rivals like McLaren closed the performance gap in recent races. The Canadian Grand Prix will feature the sport’s first sprint weekend at the venue, with cold conditions and potential rain adding extra variables to the challenge. Brundle highlighted how teams continue to make significant development strides as they adapt to the revolutionary new regulations, suggesting the competitive order could shift dramatically throughout the campaign.
