Max Verstappen to McLaren: The Shocking F1 Transfer That Could Reshape the Championship

Discussions are underway between Max Verstappen’s camp and McLaren regarding a potential move to the Woking team, with talk of a major driver swap that could see Oscar Piastri head in the opposite direction to Red Bull.

Verstappen’s future has become a central topic in the F1 paddock this season following a difficult start to 2026 that has left the three-time world champion sitting seventh in the drivers’ standings. Although the Dutchman is under contract with Red Bull until 2028, the inconsistent performance of the RB22 is fuelling speculation about an early exit from the Milton Keynes squad.

Potential McLaren-Red Bull Swap Deal

F1 journalist Joe Saward has revealed that talks have already begun between Verstappen’s representatives and McLaren to explore future possibilities. Writing in his latest analysis, Saward notes that an intriguing arrangement could be devised to facilitate the transfer.

“Under such a scenario, an intriguing swap could take shape, with Oscar Piastri heading to Red Bull while Verstappen moves to Woking.”

A move by Verstappen to McLaren would dramatically reshape the grid. The Woking outfit already benefits from a technically superior package in 2026, and adding a driver of Verstappen’s calibre could give them an even bigger edge in the fight for world titles. McLaren’s current line-up of Lando Norris and Piastri has delivered strong results, but the arrival of Verstappen would represent a seismic shift in the team’s championship ambitions.

Mercedes Monitoring the Situation

Mercedes is reportedly keeping a close watch on developments, with team principal Toto Wolff considering whether to intervene in the transfer market to prevent Verstappen from joining a direct rival. Kimi Antonelli currently leads the drivers’ championship for Mercedes, and the German manufacturer would prefer to avoid strengthening McLaren’s hand.

Saward suggests that Mercedes might be tempted to make a counteroffer to block a potential deal between Verstappen and McLaren, though he quickly points out the steep financial cost involved.

“The price tag would be enormous – something that Mercedes may not be willing to shoulder.”

Verstappen’s contract situation and the performance trajectory of the RB22 will likely determine whether these rumoured talks progress beyond preliminary discussions. Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies faces the challenge of both improving the car’s competitiveness and retaining his star driver amid mounting speculation.

The next few races will be crucial in determining whether Red Bull can reverse its fortunes and convince Verstappen that his future remains in Milton Keynes, or whether the allure of McLaren’s current package proves too strong to resist.
