Audi Formula 1 driver Nico Hulkenberg has delivered a blunt response to critics of the sport’s controversial 2026 regulations, telling detractors they should simply stop watching if they’re unhappy with the changes. The 38-year-old German veteran defended the new technical rules during an interview with The Drive, emphasizing that Formula 1 must evolve with technological advancement and industry trends.
The 2026 regulations have sparked significant debate within the paddock and among fans, particularly regarding the new power unit specifications that establish an almost equal split between internal combustion and electrical power. Critics have expressed concerns about energy management requirements affecting the racing spectacle, reduced qualifying challenges, and potential safety issues stemming from dramatic speed differentials between cars managing their energy systems differently.
Hulkenberg acknowledged the nostalgia for Formula 1’s traditional elements while defending the sport’s direction toward sustainability. “Obviously, you have these purists that love the old school and the sound of a naturally aspirated V10 and V12 – including myself! – but the reality is that it doesn’t work like that,” the experienced driver explained. He argued that Formula 1’s leadership position in automotive technology requires adaptation to contemporary industry developments.
Formula 1 officials have already responded to early criticism by implementing modifications during the Miami Grand Prix and announcing further adjustments for 2027, including a revised power split moving closer to 60-40 between combustion and electric power. Despite these concessions, Hulkenberg maintains that the initial three races under the new regulations have delivered entertaining competition with substantial on-track action, supporting his view that the changes serve the sport’s evolution as both a legitimate business and entertainment platform.
