Wolff Fears Public Backlash When Mercedes Prodigy Antonelli Faces Inevitable F1 Setbacks

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has expressed concern about the potential public reaction when rising star Kimi Antonelli encounters his first significant mistakes in Formula 1, describing the 19-year-old Italian as a “rough diamond” who needs protection from overwhelming expectations. The Austrian team boss acknowledged that while Antonelli’s exceptional early-season form has been impressive, the inevitable challenges that come with championship pressure could trigger harsh criticism from fans and media.

Antonelli currently leads teammate George Russell by 20 points in the drivers’ championship after four rounds, making history as the youngest driver and first teenager to lead an F1 title fight. The Mercedes driver has converted his first three pole positions into consecutive victories, demonstrating remarkable consistency in only his second F1 season. However, Wolff emphasized the need for measured expectations, telling La Gazzetta dello Sport that “F1 is based on consistency, not just on individual moments of success, and Kimi needs the space to grow and write his own story without too much pressure.”

When questioned about what will happen when mistakes inevitably occur, Wolff admitted his fears about the potential backlash. “That’s exactly what scares me,” the 54-year-old explained. “Kimi is young, he’s charismatic, a little big star… but after a great start, he could have some bad moments, and I don’t want the public to start saying, ‘Oh, what’s happening? We were wrong about him?'” The team principal particularly expressed concern about the reaction from Italian fans and media, given Antonelli’s nationality and rising profile.

While acknowledging that Antonelli benefited from some fortune in his first two victories, with Russell often experiencing misfortune, Wolff praised the teenager’s commanding performance at the Miami Grand Prix where he clearly outclassed his experienced teammate throughout the weekend. The Mercedes boss stressed that the team is prepared for the growth process ahead, including the inevitable setbacks that come with championship battles, but emphasized that everyone involved must treat Antonelli as a developing talent rather than expecting immediate perfection in his pursuit of becoming “one of the greats of F1.”
