Ecclestone Rules Out Russell’s Championship Hopes for 2025

Former F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has publicly dismissed George Russell’s chances of winning the 2026 World Championship, casting doubt on the Mercedes driver’s title credentials despite the Briton’s strong form since joining the Silver Arrows.

Ecclestone, who ran Formula 1’s commercial operations for four decades before Liberty Media’s takeover, made the comments as the 2026 season unfolds under the sport’s new technical regulations. Russell, who has been with Mercedes since 2022 and is now partnered with rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli, has yet to secure a drivers’ championship despite multiple race wins.

Russell’s Mercedes Tenure

The 28-year-old has established himself as one of the grid’s most consistent performers, but faces stiff competition in 2026 from Max Verstappen at Red Bull Racing, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari, and the resurgent McLaren pairing of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Mercedes has undergone significant restructuring to adapt to the new power unit and active aerodynamics regulations introduced this season.

Ecclestone’s assessment comes at a time when the championship battle is taking shape, though his views no longer carry operational weight within the sport. The former commercial rights holder has remained an outspoken commentator on F1’s current landscape since his departure.

Title Fight Takes Shape

Russell’s status as a championship contender depends largely on Mercedes’ ability to extract performance from the radically overhauled 2026 technical package, which features power units running at approximately 50 percent electrical output and active aerodynamic systems. The team has won multiple constructors’ championships but has not produced a drivers’ champion since Hamilton’s last title in 2020.

The next race weekend will provide further clarity on where Russell and Mercedes stand relative to their rivals as teams continue to unlock performance from the new regulations.
