FIA Confirms Major F1 Power Unit Overhaul for 2027 Following Driver Pressure

The FIA has announced significant modifications to Formula 1’s power unit regulations for 2027 after mounting pressure from drivers who felt recent changes hadn’t addressed their concerns about racing quality. The decision emerged from a virtual meeting that brought together all 11 team principals, Formula One Management officials, and representatives from the five power unit manufacturers: Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull Powertrains, Audi, and Honda.

Under the agreed framework, the 2027 regulations will feature a substantial increase of approximately 50kW in Internal Combustion Engine power alongside higher fuel flow limits, while simultaneously reducing Energy Recovery System deployment power by roughly 50kW. These modifications aim to create more intuitive racing conditions for drivers while enhancing competitive balance and safety standards across the grid.

The regulatory shake-up follows the implementation of rule changes at the Miami Grand Prix, which were introduced primarily for safety reasons and to restore qualifying as a pure test of speed. While the Miami modifications received positive feedback and demonstrated improved competition without safety issues, drivers maintained that more comprehensive hardware changes were necessary to enhance the spectacle during race weekends.

According to the FIA’s official statement, the Miami package showed promising results in reducing excessive energy harvesting and improving safety, leading to better on-track competition. The governing body confirmed that evaluation of these changes continues, with additional adjustments planned for future events, including enhanced start safety procedures and improved wet weather safety measures that could debut as early as the Canadian Grand Prix.

The proposed 2027 changes require further technical discussions between teams and power unit manufacturers before finalization. The FIA emphasized that these proposals resulted from extensive consultations with multiple stakeholders over recent weeks, with drivers providing crucial input throughout the process. Final approval will come through a World Motor Sport Council electronic vote once power unit manufacturers have endorsed the package.
