Honda Shifts Focus to Performance Optimization After Miami Reliability Breakthrough

Honda has announced a strategic shift in priorities following a significant reliability milestone achieved at the Miami Grand Prix, where both Aston Martin drivers completed their first full race distance of the 2026 Formula 1 season. The Japanese power unit manufacturer can now concentrate on performance improvements after resolving the critical reliability issues that plagued the opening rounds of their partnership with Aston Martin.

The Honda power unit had suffered from persistent vibration problems that created substantial stress on both the Aston Martin chassis and drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll throughout the early stages of the campaign. These technical difficulties prevented either driver from reaching the checkered flag in previous races, marking Miami as a crucial turning point for the struggling partnership.

Honda’s chief engineer Shintaro Orihara confirmed that extensive collaborative efforts between Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) and Aston Martin since the Japanese Grand Prix had yielded effective solutions. “We confirmed they are working well and also I’d say the drivers gave us positive comments that is good progress for Aston Martin and Honda,” Orihara explained to media including RacingNews365. “We have completed a full race distance and also a sprint race distance without any major reliability issues.”

With the reliability foundation now established, Honda is pivoting toward performance optimization after being forced to prioritize basic operational stability in the season’s early stages. Orihara outlined the manufacturer’s next phase of development, stating, “The next focus point, we can focus on optimising our data settings for energy management and also driveability. There is still a lot of room to improve on our power unit. That’s next.”
