Ferrari’s hopes of closing the gap to championship leaders Mercedes suffered a significant setback at the 2026 Miami Grand Prix, with their latest upgrade package failing to deliver the expected performance gains. Despite entering the weekend as the closest challenger to the dominant Silver Arrows through the season’s opening three rounds, the Italian team found themselves relegated to fourth-fastest overall after qualifying sessions.
Charles Leclerc managed only the third-quickest time in Saturday’s grand prix qualifying with a 1:28.143, a disappointing result that was actually slower than both McLaren drivers’ efforts from Friday’s sprint qualifying session. Most notably, Leclerc’s best lap fell short of Lando Norris’s impressive 1:27.869 from the previous day, highlighting Ferrari’s backward step despite their technical updates.
The qualifying sessions proved challenging for most competitors due to variable wind conditions that prevented consistent lap time improvements. Andrea Kimi Antonelli emerged as the standout performer, being the only front-runner to combine all his best sector times into a single flying lap. Less than half of the Q3 participants managed to improve their times during their final attempts, underlining the difficult conditions.
While Mercedes temporarily slipped to second-fastest on Friday, they quickly reclaimed their position when McLaren couldn’t match their earlier pace on Saturday. The competitive landscape remains encouraging, with just four-tenths of a second separating the top four teams. Significantly, Mercedes was the only leading squad not to introduce major upgrades this weekend, with plans to debut their package at the next race.
The 2026 regulation changes have resulted in lap times approximately 1.5 seconds slower than the previous year in Miami. However, current cars are running roughly one second per lap quicker than when they first raced at this venue under F1’s ground effect rules, with track resurfacing between the initial races contributing to the improved times.
