The Miami Grand Prix faces potential disruption this weekend as weather forecasts predict heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across the Miami Gardens area, raising the prospect of race suspension under United States safety regulations.
Some forecasts indicate an 80-90 per cent chance of rain on Sunday, with a 50-60 per cent likelihood of thunderstorms passing through the circuit during race hours. The latter figure has put race organisers on alert, as US law mandates that all major outdoor public events must be suspended if thunderstorms pose a threat within a few miles of the venue.
Under such conditions, the medical helicopter would be grounded and spectators required to evacuate, forcing drivers off track under red flag conditions regardless of whether the on-track racing conditions would be acceptable by normal Formula 1 standards.
Special Pit Lane Rules in Effect
Formula 1 has implemented a special protocol for all three American races to account for the stricter safety requirements. Teams will be permitted to work on their cars inside the garage rather than outdoors in the pit lane during weather-related stoppages.
Should thunderstorms force a suspension, all cars must return to the pit lane and stop in the fast lane. Once every car has returned, drivers will move them into the garages. Any cars already in the garage at the moment of suspension will be placed at the back of the order should racing resume.
The regulations create additional pressure on race control, as the total elapsed time between the race start and the final chequered flag cannot exceed three hours. Extended weather delays could therefore prevent the race from reaching its scheduled distance.
Championship Picture
The potential disruption comes after a month-long break in the calendar following the cancellation of both the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian rounds due to ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Formula 1 has completed just three races in 2026, with Andrea Kimi Antonelli leading the drivers’ standings for Mercedes.
George Russell sits second for the Silver Arrows, while Ferrari have made a strong start with Charles Leclerc third and Lewis Hamilton fourth. Reigning champion Lando Norris occupies fifth ahead of McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri in sixth, with four-time champion Max Verstappen down in ninth.
Miami experienced significant weather disruption last year, when heavy downpours interrupted the sprint race and forced the cancellation of the F1 Academy event. Piastri went on to win the 2025 Miami Grand Prix.
Weekend Schedule
The Miami Grand Prix weekend runs from 2-4 May at the Miami International Autodrome. First practice begins Friday morning, with qualifying scheduled for Saturday afternoon and the race on Sunday. Race control will monitor weather developments closely as the weekend progresses, with contingency planning already underway for potential delays.
