Turkey Confirmed to Make F1 Calendar Return in 2027 After Seven-Year Absence

Turkey is set to return to the Formula 1 calendar in 2027, marking the country’s comeback to the championship after a multi-year absence.

The nation last hosted a Grand Prix at Istanbul Park in 2021, when the circuit served as a replacement venue during the pandemic-disrupted season. Valtteri Bottas won that race for Mercedes. Turkey previously held races from 2005 to 2011 before dropping off the calendar, then returned briefly for the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

Istanbul Park’s F1 History

Istanbul Park, designed by Hermann Tilke and opened in 2005, became famous for its Turn 8 — a long, multi-apex left-hander that drivers consistently ranked among the best corners in motorsport. The circuit hosted memorable races during its original run, including Felipe Massa’s 2006 victory and Sebastian Vettel’s maiden win in 2009.

The track’s return in 2020 came with a newly resurfaced asphalt that proved extremely low-grip, creating chaotic conditions. Lewis Hamilton secured his seventh world title there. The 2021 event saw improved grip levels and a more conventional race.

2027 Calendar Implications

The confirmation of Turkey’s return adds another destination to Formula 1’s expanding calendar. The 2026 season is already expected to feature a record number of races, and the addition of Turkey for 2027 will require careful scheduling to accommodate existing venues and maintain a sustainable calendar structure.

Details about the race date, contract length, and whether Turkey will be a permanent fixture or rotating event have not yet been disclosed. The 2027 calendar is expected to be finalised and published by the FIA World Motor Sport Council later in 2026.
