Pirelli Predicts Two-Stop Strategy Dominance as F1’s 2026 Regulation Era Unfolds

Pirelli anticipates a shift toward more two-stop strategies as the 2026 Formula 1 season unfolds, reflecting the operational demands of the sport’s major technical overhaul.

The Italian tyre manufacturer expects teams to increasingly favour two-stop approaches as the season progresses and teams extract more performance from the new-generation machinery. The 2026 regulations introduced sweeping changes to chassis design, power unit architecture, and active aerodynamics, fundamentally altering the mechanical and thermal loads placed on tyres throughout a grand prix distance.

New Regulations Drive Strategy Evolution

The 2026 cars represent the most significant regulatory reset in recent Formula 1 history. Power units now draw approximately 50 per cent of their output from electrical energy, while active aerodynamics adjust drag levels dynamically through each lap. These changes have redefined how tyres interact with track surfaces, particularly in high-speed corners and under braking.

Early-season races have provided Pirelli with initial data on degradation patterns and thermal behaviour under the new technical framework. As teams refine their setups and unlock additional pace, the increased energy transfer through the tyres is expected to accelerate wear rates, making single-stop strategies less viable at circuits where they might have been feasible under previous regulations.

Strategic Implications for Teams

The move toward two-stop races carries significant implications for race strategy and competitive dynamics. Teams with stronger tyre management will gain an advantage in extending stint lengths, while those struggling with degradation may face difficult decisions on when to commit to a second stop.

Pirelli’s projection also suggests that undercut and overcut opportunities will become more frequent as the season develops, adding tactical complexity to race execution. The increased number of pit stops could also amplify the importance of pit crew performance and strategic timing under Safety Car periods.

The next race weekend will provide further data points as teams continue to adapt to the new technical landscape and Pirelli gathers information on how tyre behaviour evolves across different circuit layouts and ambient conditions.
