Haas Team Principal Ayao Komatsu has lauded Oliver Bearman’s exceptional ability to inspire those around him, describing the young British driver’s motivational qualities as a crucial asset that extends far beyond his impressive racing performances. The 20-year-old has emerged as one of Formula 1’s standout performers in the early stages of the 2026 season, currently sitting seventh in the championship standings with 17 points after strong finishes in Australia and China, plus a points-scoring Sprint result in Shanghai.
Speaking during the Team Representatives press conference in Suzuka, Komatsu emphasized Bearman’s continuous development since his surprise Formula 1 debut at the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, where he stepped in for Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz on short notice due to the Spaniard’s appendicitis. The Japanese team principal noted significant improvements in Bearman’s consistency and race craft, particularly highlighting his impressive fourth-place finish in Mexico City last season, which delivered Haas their best result of 2025.
“He takes steps every single time,” Komatsu explained, praising Bearman’s ability to absorb information and understand the bigger picture. “As we said, his speed’s never been in doubt. Then you saw the consistency improvement towards the end of last year. Mexico, P4, was amazing under huge pressure.” The team boss also commended Bearman’s error-free performances in the opening races of 2026, demonstrating the young driver’s growing maturity and reliability.
What particularly impresses Komatsu is Bearman’s positive influence on the entire team environment. “The thing is that his attitude is very, very positive, so he brings the best out of people around him as well, engineers, mechanics, everyone,” the team principal revealed. “Even when [a] less than ideal situation happens, the way he deals with it, he actually doesn’t depress people, he actually motivates people to be able to solve the problem quicker. So that’s a natural attribute he’s got.”
Komatsu concluded by expressing his optimism about Bearman’s future potential, stating that the team already enjoys working with the British driver and that he cannot see a ceiling to his development. This endorsement underscores Haas’s confidence in their young talent as they look to build momentum in what has been a promising start to the 2026 Formula 1 season.
