Alonso Welcomes First Child, Names Son Leonard After Birth Delays Japanese GP Arrival

Two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso has revealed his newborn son’s name as Leonard, putting to rest speculation that he had named the child after himself. The Aston Martin driver welcomed his first child with partner Melissa Jiménez approximately one week before the Japanese Grand Prix, causing him to arrive later than planned at Suzuka Circuit.

Speaking to DAZN after returning to the paddock for Friday practice sessions, Alonso reflected on the life-changing experience. “Well, you never really imagine anything in particular, right? Everything comes as it comes, and… well, with a bit of stress and worry that everything would go well,” the Spaniard explained. “Fortunately, both the mother and the baby are fine, and yeah, very happy. A super happy, very special moment, and now, back to work.”

The 42-year-old driver confirmed his son’s name through an Instagram story, sharing an image of a paddock pass already prepared by Formula 1 for the newborn. The credential clearly displayed “Leonard Alonso Jiménez,” prompting Alonso to express his gratitude with the caption “big thanks to F1! First of many.” This gesture suggests the proud father hopes his son might follow in his footsteps within the sport.

Alonso also used social media to debunk earlier rumors that he had named his child Fernando Jr. He posted a clip from a Spanish television program that had incorrectly reported the baby’s name during a reveal segment, adding his own caption to clarify the misinformation while sharing a laugh about the mix-up. The birth marks a new chapter for the veteran driver, who continues his Formula 1 career in his second season with Aston Martin.
