Sainz at Career Crossroads as Williams Struggles Continue, Says Hinchcliffe

Carlos Sainz finds himself at a pivotal juncture in his Formula 1 career following his move to Williams, according to former IndyCar driver and F1 TV presenter James Hinchcliffe. The Spanish driver was forced to seek new opportunities after Ferrari opted to replace him with seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton for the 2025 season, eventually choosing Williams from several available options.

Williams currently languishes in ninth place in the constructors’ championship with just two points, both scored by Sainz through his ninth-place finish at the Chinese Grand Prix. The Grove-based team continues to grapple with an overweight car that has hampered their performance throughout the season, leaving Sainz in a challenging position as he adapts to his new environment.

Speaking on the F1 Nation podcast, Hinchcliffe outlined the two paths available to the former Ferrari driver. “He’s got two options, right? He’s got to wallow in self-pity and play the woulda, coulda, shoulda game, or it’s the buckle down and I’m gonna prove that I made the right call because teams can turn around,” Hinchcliffe explained.

The television presenter emphasized that Sainz’s Williams project was never intended as a short-term solution, noting that even the most optimistic projections didn’t envision championship contention by 2026. Hinchcliffe believes the key for Sainz lies in embracing the challenge and helping Williams realize the potential he recognized when making his initial commitment to join team principal James Vowles’ ambitious rebuilding program.
