Lando Norris has suffered a significant blow to his Formula 1 title defense following an investigation by McLaren and Mercedes High Performance Powertrains that revealed irreparable damage to one of his power unit battery systems. The damage stems from the electrical issues that prevented both McLaren drivers from starting the Chinese Grand Prix, leaving the British driver with just two battery packs for the remaining 20 races of the season.
While Mercedes HPP engineers successfully repaired and salvaged Oscar Piastri’s battery system from his MCL60, they were unable to restore Norris’s damaged unit to working condition. This puts the 11-time Grand Prix winner at a considerable disadvantage compared to his championship rivals, as Formula 1 regulations typically allow only two battery packs per car per season before grid penalties are imposed for additional changes.
The current season’s major regulation changes have provided teams with three battery components per car, offering some relief. However, losing one-third of his allocation so early in the campaign significantly constrains Norris’s strategic options for the remainder of the championship fight, beginning with this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix.
“Alongside HPP, it took a little bit of time to figure things out,” Norris explained to media outlets. “Of course, it hurt us as a team; it certainly didn’t make us look good to have two cars not starting a race. I think what hurt more was the fact that it was out of our control.” Despite the setback, the McLaren driver emphasized the learning opportunity presented by the disappointing episode.
Norris remained philosophical about the situation, highlighting the team’s collaborative approach with their power unit supplier to prevent future occurrences. “But with HPP, we’ve worked hard to figure things out, to understand how it happened, why it happened, and of course, we’ll do everything we can to make sure it doesn’t happen again,” he stated, adding that while the experience was painful for everyone involved, it provided valuable lessons for moving forward.
