Mario Andretti Praises Colton Herta’s ‘Pure Desire’ to Reach Formula 1

Formula 1 legend Mario Andretti has expressed deep admiration for fellow American Colton Herta’s bold decision to leave IndyCar behind in pursuit of his Formula 1 aspirations. The 1978 world champion highlighted Herta’s unwavering commitment to reaching the pinnacle of motorsport, despite the significant career risks involved in stepping away from a successful IndyCar program.

Herta currently holds a test driver role with Cadillac’s upcoming F1 operation while simultaneously competing in Formula 2 to develop the skills and credentials necessary for a future grand prix seat. Speaking to Autosport, Andretti emphasized the importance of genuine passion in such career moves, stating: “You can tell he truly, truly wants to do it. And it has to begin there, with that passion inside and I like that. I respect that tremendously.”

The racing icon further elaborated on Herta’s motivations during an appearance on the Drive to Wynn podcast, explaining that the young driver possesses “pure, pure desire to be in Formula 1” and recognizing that such dedication is essential for success at the sport’s highest level. Andretti noted that while American drivers can build fulfilling careers in domestic series like IndyCar, NASCAR, and IMSA, Herta clearly views F1 as unfinished business.

Andretti praised Herta’s willingness to sacrifice immediate success for long-term goals, describing the move as taking “a step back to make many steps forward.” The veteran champion revealed he had extensive conversations with Herta following recent racing activities in Melbourne, noting that the younger driver remains well-informed and committed to his F1 ambitions despite the challenging transition period.
