Albon Continues to Elevate Southeast Asia’s Formula 1 Legacy as He Turns 30

Alexander Albon made Formula 1 history during his debut season in 2019, becoming Thailand’s most successful F1 driver by surpassing the career points total of Prince Bira with just eight points earned at the German Grand Prix. Now celebrating his 30th birthday, the Williams driver has spent the past six seasons cementing Southeast Asia’s presence in the sport’s highest echelon while building upon a racing heritage that spans more than seven decades.

The Thai driver’s journey to F1 began in karting, where his talent was so remarkable that Red Bull signed him to their junior program at age 12, and fellow F1 star Lando Norris famously had an Albon poster in his childhood bedroom. Racing runs in Albon’s family through both his father and uncle, while he represents Thailand in honor of his mother’s heritage. After working through the single-seater ranks alongside future F1 stars including George Russell and Charles Leclerc, Albon made his grand prix debut with Toro Rosso in 2018.

Albon’s impressive 12-race stint with the Red Bull sister team earned him a mid-season promotion to the senior squad, leading to a full-time Red Bull seat in 2020. His breakthrough moment came at Mugello, where he became Thailand’s first F1 podium finisher through late-race heroics in Italy. A second podium followed in Bahrain, though it wasn’t enough to secure his Red Bull future, relegating him to a reserve role in 2021 before his successful Williams comeback in 2022.

Southeast Asia’s F1 representation extends beyond Albon’s current success story. Prince Birabongse Bhanudej Bhanubandh, known as Prince Bira, competed in 19 races from 1950-1954, achieving one fifth-place and two fourth-place finishes while simultaneously serving as an RAF pilot trainer during World War II and competing in four Summer Olympics sailing events. The region has also produced Indonesian Rio Haryanto, who raced 12 times for Manor in 2016, and Malaysian Alex Yoong, who entered 18 grands prix with Minardi from 2001-2002.

The Southeast Asian influence in F1 extends to team ownership as well, with Malaysian entrepreneur Tony Fernandes bringing Lotus Racing to the 2010-2011 championships before rebranding as Caterham for their 2012-2014 campaign. As Albon continues building on his eighth-place finish in the 2025 championship standings with Williams, the growing Southeast Asian fanbase has renewed reason for optimism about their region’s expanding Formula 1 footprint.
